Padmashri Award Recipient Salumarada Thimmakka is no more.

Salumrada Thimmakka, a remarkable environmental activist from the village of Salumrada in Karnataka, India, is best known for her extraordinary efforts in tree planting and environmental conservation. Born in 1911, Thimmakka faced significant challenges in her life, including poverty and the inability to have children, but she channeled her energies into a cause that would have a lasting impact on her community and the environment. In the 1990s, she started planting banyan trees along a 4-kilometer stretch of highway near her village, initially planting 284 saplings. Over the years, her efforts grew into a full-scale environmental mission, resulting in more than 8,000 trees being planted. Her work not only transformed the landscape but also created a sustainable ecosystem that benefitted local wildlife and improved the quality of life in the area.

Thimmakka’s contribution to environmental conservation has earned her numerous accolades and widespread recognition both in India and abroad. Despite having no formal education, her deep connection to nature and her hands-on approach to reforestation led to her being celebrated as one of the most iconic figures in India’s environmental movement. She has received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of her selfless service to the environment. Thimmakka’s story is a powerful reminder that small, determined actions can lead to significant positive changes, and her legacy continues to inspire individuals and communities around the world to take responsibility for the planet’s well-being.
